So lets hear some opinions on what would be the best design program to learn, pros and cons for each. Rhino3D comes with various design features and can create complex 3D models. The software used NURB, a precise mathematical model that enables manipulation of solids, surfaces, meshes, curves and points in different ways. It can be used on Windows, Mac and Linux, and reads and writes many open file formats including popular 3D printing formats such as STL, OBJ, and DAE. I imagine myself designing straightforward mechanical designs (the first thing being a malt mill) where I can see my kids wanting to design toys, figurines, toy guns, etc. Rhino3D is a commercial 3D computer graphics and CAD program that is known for versatility. FreeCAD is a 3D design program that allows you to easily navigate and modify your 3D model by browsing back into the model history and changing its individual elements. I have them both installed and it appears the learning curve for freecad is significantly less steep then for blender but I dont want to waste me and my family's time learning a piece of software that has a lot of limitations. I am a linux opensource guy so it appears that the best options for us are blender or freecad. I have no experience with any type of cad design other then some rudimentary training with autocad back in the 90s during trade school.Īt the kids school they are only learning the very basics with proprietary software so there is no point trying to learn the same thing here at home. For most of our thing we’ll be using the Part Design workbench. The family has been bugging me to get a 3d printer for awhile now and we are going to pull the trigger on a Prusa i3 MK3 early in the new year to tinker with. FreeCAD is unique among 3D design programs in that it has many different workbenches, or modes, to draw and model in.
